Friday, October 1 - Optional concert and dinner at Casa da Musica (Concert Hall)

October 1 is the international music day and also the day that Casa da Musica offers a special concert to commemorate the 10th anniversary of “Orquestra Nacional do Porto” (National Orchestra of Porto), so nothing better than visiting Casa da Musica!

Casa da Música was conceived to mark 2001, the year in which Porto was Cultural Capital of Europe, and it is the first new building in Portugal to be entirely dedicated to music. Casa da Música is part of a network of cultural facilities, for the city of Porto and for the wider world, and an arena for all types of musical events - from classical music to jazz, from fado to electronic music, from great international productions to more experimental projects. Casa da Musica is alro renowed for its architecture - it was designed by the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas.

In the concert that celebrates the 10-year journey of Orquestra Nacional do Porto towards a symphonic formation, the programme includes the European premiere of a joint commission of Casa da Música, New York Philharmonic Orchestra and London Philharmonic Orchestra with the composer Magnus Lindberg. A version of Mahler's Symphony No. 10 that was finished by Deryck Cooke completes the anniversary programme and is a debut in the ONP repertoire, representing a peak moment in the complete series that the orchestra presents in 2010/11. Saturday, October 2 - Optional program in Alto Douro Wine Region (UNESCO World Heritage)

Wine has been produced by traditional landholders in the Alto Douro region for some 2,000 years. Since the 18th century, its main product, port wine, has been world famous for its quality - the Douro Valley is the oldest certified wine making region in the world, dating back to 1756. This long tradition of viticulture has produced a cultural landscape of outstanding beauty that reflects its technological, social and economic evolution, that justified its classification as World Heritage Center by UNESCO.

September/October is the harvest time in the Douro region - the best time to visit this wonderful region. In this program, we'll travel by small buses to the Alto Douro Region, experience its extraordinary landscape on the way, and visit a traditional wine producer: Quinta de Santa Eufemia - an independent family house, founded in 1864, situated in the valley of the Douro River, South East of Peso da Régua. Here we'll be received in a very friendly environment, visit the vineyeards, participate in the harvest, have a typical harvest lunch, visit the wine cellars and learn about the history of the Douro valley and its wine, listen to traditional music, and, if conditions permit, watch and participate in the traditional grape crushing.

Program:

  • Departure from hotels in Porto at about 8:30.
  • Transportation to Alto Douro Region
  • Visit to Quinta de Santa Eufemia: vineyeards, harvest, lunch, history, cellars, traditional music, and, if conditions permit, grape crushing
